Rangoon Incident
   On October 9, 1983, operatives from North Korea placed a bomb in the Martyrs' Mausoleum north of the Shwe Dagon Pagoda in Rangoon (Yangon) that killed 21 people, including four ministers in the cabinet of the president of South Korea, Chon Doo Hwan, who was beginning a state visit to five Asian countries. Chon himself narrowly escaped assassination because of a delay in his arrival at the monument for a wreath-laying ceremony. Security forces tracked down three North Koreans, one of whom was killed and the others put on trial and sentenced to death. Burma immediately broke off relations with Pyongyang, which before the bombing had been close and cordial. The incident was deeply embarrassing to the government of Ne Win, and many observers attribute it to security lapses and disarray in Military Intelligence following the purge of "MI" Tin Oo earlier that year.
